Officially founded in 1977, The Chinese University of Hong Kong Press (CUHK Press) is a world-class English-Chinese bilingual publisher. With a reputation as a publishing powerhouse in China studies, it publishes about 60 new books per year and carries over 2,300 titles on its backlist. We are seeking an enthusiastic rights professional to enhance the brand of CUHK Press and increase subsidiary rights income.
Working with the editorial and marketing teams, the appointee will play a key role to lead our rights and permission section. He/She will (a) maintain positive working relationships, and forge new links with foreign publishers and agents; (b) sell subsidiary rights to publishers and clients in Mainland China, Taiwan, the United States and other parts of the world; (c) acquire Chinese- or English-language rights from other publishers and agents; (d) deal with permission requests, granting individuals or organisations licence to use or translate contents of our publications; (e) draft and follow up on contracts and publishing agreements; (f) handle invoices and monitor payments (chase pending invoices); (g) liaise with the Hong Kong Copyright Licensing Association, public libraries and other local institutions on rights matters; (h) attend book fairs and undertake sales trips to Beijing, Taiwan and other regions; and (i) design rights catalogues, international sales documents, and marketing materials.
Applicants should have/be (i) a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university; (ii) an excellent command of spoken and written English and Chinese; (iii) a book lover; (iv) strong organisational and administrative skills; (v) excellent multitasking skills; (vi) strong communication, presentation and negotiation skills; (vii) detail-oriented and able to meet deadlines; and (viii) the ability to work as part of a team and independently. Prior experience in the academic rights or trade publishing is preferred but not essential. On-the-job training will be provided.
