CUHK Library is seeking a high-caliber professional to take a major role in implementing its digital library strategies to maximize the effective use of existing and emerging digital technologies in support of the research needs of the University.

Applicants should have (i) a good University degree in a related discipline, preferably in computer science, software engineering or equivalent, and/or a recognised professional qualification in library and information science (MLS or equivalent); (ii) at least three years’ post-qualification relevant experience (for Assistant Librarian II) OR at least six years’ post-qualification relevant experience, three years of which are at supervisory level (for Assistant Librarian I); (iii) demonstrated ability in software and Web application development including database-driven Web application programming and development, open source software development, user-interface design, and agile development methodology; (iv) working knowledge of XML, CSS, PHP backend development, Javascript, and preferably an understanding of Linux or Windows operating systems, Perl, Drupal development, Apache Solr, CJK indexing and Unicode; (v) excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to develop innovative processes and solutions; and (vi) strong interpersonal skills for working in a team-based environment. Familiarity with GIS, text-mining, and other emerging digital technologies is advantageous.

Working in the Research Support and Digital Initiatives team, the appointee’s duties include (a) taking lead in introducing and implementing advanced digital technologies in the Library; (b) developing and managing the Library’s digital initiatives including but not limited to digital publishing, Web-archiving and digital preservation; (c) building up the Library’s capacity to manage technically complex projects in support of digital research; (d) performing both support and developer responsibilities in digital technologies that should evolve with the needs of the Library; (e) full life-cycle development of Web and software applications including collecting user requirements, designing solutions, program code development, implementation and maintenance; and (f) working collaboratively with relevant units of the Library and the University to establish standards and workflow for applications development in the team, and to explore opportunities for development of new services. Occasional evening and weekend duties may be required.

Appointment will initially be made on contract basis for up to two years, renewable subject to mutual agreement.
