Much like its schools and universities, Hong Kong's tutoring centres are locked in a stiff battle to attract and retain high-calibre teaching staff.
Adding to the challenge, tutors at centres that offer recognised certificates, diplomas and degrees often need to have extra qualifications. As such, many private education centres find themselves competing with international schools for talent.
"Education is a high-growth area in Hong Kong and we are poised to continue to expand rapidly to accommodate the evolving market," says Duc Luu, CEO at The Edge Learning Center. "Currently we have hiring requirements across the spectrum, from test-preparation instructors and teachers to admissions consultants, operational leadership and support staff, and sales and marketing professionals."
When it comes finding a suitable candidate, Luu says that The Edge expects, at minimum, a bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree, or equivalent, from a top college or university. Potential candidates are also required to have at least two years of teaching experience. "Most importantly, recruits should have a commitment to excellence in all endeavours coupled with a passion for education," Luu says.
In terms of tactics, The Edge takes a multi-channel approach to the recruitment process. "We cast our net widely using a variety of proven recruiting sources, including referrals, online advertising, direct sourcing at colleges and universities via placement offices and alumni groups, and partnerships with recruitment firms. Our team of scholars contains some of the best and brightest in Asia who have joined us from around the globe," Luu says.
Before a job is offered, Luu says that selected qualified candidates undergo an interview with three to four members of The Edge's team. The interview process includes a teaching lesson to demonstrate a candidate's performance in the classroom. "A unanimous team decision to hire must be achieved before references are checked and an offer is extended," Luu says.
Once hired, new employees participate in a comprehensive on-boarding training programme which varies in length from two weeks to one month. Employees are also enrolled in a mentoring programme and receive on-going training throughout their career. "Our investment in our employees from the beginning ensures a community of achievement and success," Luu says. He adds that compensation packages at The Edge continue to evolve as the school grows.
