What does your company do?

Autodesk is an American multinational corporation that makes software for the architecture, engineering, construction, manufacturing, media, and entertainment industries. Autodesk is headquartered in San Rafael, California, and has offices worldwide, including Hong Kong. The company was founded in 1982 by John Walker, a co-author of the first versions of AutoCAD, the company’s flagship computer-aided design (CAD) software. 

What sort of brands and products are associated with your company?

Autodesk became best known for AutoCAD, but now develops a broad range of software for design, engineering, and entertainment, as well as a line of software for consumers, including Sketchbook. The company makes educational versions of its software available at no cost to qualified students and faculty through the Autodesk Education Community.

Autodesk’s Media and Entertainment division creates software for visual effects, colour grading, and editing as well as animation, game development, and design visualisation.

What activities do you have planned for your shadows?

We have planned a three-day technology learning and application journey for my shadows, giving them the opportunity to network with professionals within the AEC and creative industries, and learn about the challenges and trends of technology adoption for better design. The shadows will also attend knowledge exchange seminars to get an idea of the career path that they may follow in the future.

What do you hope your shadows will get out of the experience?

Throughout the programme, I hope they can learn to be creative, innovative and open-minded. Successful teamwork is also important to realise at work. They can also learn the capabilities required for being a leader in a productive work environment.

What leadership skills are you personally hoping to impart?

Mutual respect and team spirit are important things to maintain in a performing team. I will help the shadows explore personal development pathways and creativity at work at any time.

What skills and experience are you looking for in applicants?

We are looking for candidates who are passionate about applying creative ideas and technologies at work. Those who are creative, proactive and committed team players are desirable.

Did you ever benefit at the start of your career from the guidance of a mentor or more experienced colleague?

Yes, I had a mentor at the start of my career and I still find it very useful to obtain advice and guidance from him when needed.

What is the job market like for graduates in your industry?

As the technology field is dynamic and every industry needs to apply innovative technologies for better productivity, there are increasing opportunities for graduates to capture. The job market looks bright for them.
