Career Forum Oct 2017: Exciting careers in STEM with HKSTP

What does your company do?

Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) provides an ecosystem for innovation, technology and entrepreneurship aimed at helping Hong Kong’s economy grow and diversify by fostering talent, interest and investment in in  science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)-related businesses. To this end, we run a successful incubation programme for start-ups and operate extensive infrastructure to support technology companies. We maintain a focus on five key technology clusters — biomedical, electronics, green technology, information and communications technology (ICT), and material and precision engineering — that have the potential to transform Hong Kong into a new epicentre of tech innovation.

What sort of brands and products are associated with your company?

Our core is currently the Hong Kong Science Park, a 22-hectare waterfront campus which comprises 21 state-of-the- art buildings housing advanced laboratories and research and development (R&D) offices, as well as a seamless network of support spaces.

Right now, the park accommodates 639 companies, which employ nearly 13,000 people, more than 70 per cent of whom are involved in R&D-related activities. We also manage three modern industrial estates — in Tai Po, Yuen Long, and Tseung Kwan O — focused on different industry segments, and operate the design-oriented InnoCentre in Kowloon Tong.

This year, HKSTP was given a mandate to develop and manage the upcoming Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park, to be located on the 87-hectare Lok Ma Chau Loop, adjacent to Shenzhen.

What activities do you have planned for your shadows?

I’ll be shadowed during various internal meetings, including operational reviews and a strategic planning session. I’ll also bring my shadows along to some external engagements and visits to various Park companies.

I’m hoping they will also be able to help with the development of a new directory for the Park companies, designed to highlight their technology capabilities and market focuses.

What do you hope your shadows will get out of the experience?

I hope my shadows will be able to pick up some leadership skills, gain insight into different technology sectors and an appreciation of the innovation and technology ecosystem in Hong Kong. I want this to be an inspiring experience so they will be motivated to follow a STEM-related career path and ultimately make a positive impact by contributing to the future of Hong Kong society.

What leadership skills are you personally hoping to impart?

One key lesson I’ve learned during more than three decades in technology-related businesses is to embrace diversity. I hope my shadows will learn that to be a successful leader you must be able to engage and work with people at all levels, both inside and outside your organisation.

What skills and experience are you looking for in applicants?

To maximise the value of being my shadow, the three successful applicants will have to be well organised and outgoing in nature because they’re going to meet a lot of people.

Did you ever benefit at the start of your career from the guidance of a mentor or more experienced colleague?

Yes, absolutely. Many people have helped me along my career path; not just at the start but right the way through. I believe every day is a learning opportunity that you can benefit from by keeping an open mind and being aware of what’s happening around you.

What is the job market like for graduates in your industry?

There are enormous opportunities for Hong Kong STEM graduates. With the support of consistent policies and on-going investment, Hong Kong is becoming an innovation-led and technology-intensive economy, which will generate huge demand for STEM-related talent.
