The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (“University”) is established in accordance with the Regulations of the People’s Republic of China on Chinese-foreign Cooperation in Running Schools upon approval of the Ministry of Education. It inherits the educational philosophy and academic systems of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. It is intended to evolve into a world class research university with strong Chinese cultural influence. It is committed to nurturing high end talents with global perspective, Chinese tradition and social responsibility.
At present, the University has programmes in science, engineering, economic management, and humanities and social science. The University is featured with an international learning environment, a bilingual teaching pedagogy, a collegiate system, general education courses, multidisciplinary programmes and a student-centered educational philosophy.
The aim of creating the School of Humanities and Social Science is to provide foundations in humanities and social science through its teaching for students to gain insights into the past, while enabling them to critically examine contemporary issues, and explore answers for a sustainable future, so that our students can be better positioned to respond to challenges facing China and the world. In the beginning years, our School offers core courses of the University, ranging from language courses to General Education foundation and elective courses, including also IT and PE courses. Our curricula focus on developing students’ analytical abilities, critical comprehension, effective communication skills, IT literacy, as well as their physical fitness, which are essential to their further studies and lifelong learning.
The Self-Access Language Learning Centre (The SALL Centre) is a unit within the School of Humanities and Social Science set up to provide individualized language learning opportunities for students to consolidate and brush up their level of English language proficiency. The Centre is open to all students enrolled at CUHK(SZ), regardless of their levels of study. Learning is completely on students’ own, at the students’ own pace and by the students’ own choice of learning materials.
Services provided at the Centre include computerized English learning programmes, tutoring/consultation, workshops, seminars and the English Table. The e-learning programmes are self-accessed and provide students with the opportunity to reinforce and expand their knowledge and skills in the use of English. Tutoring provides students with face-to-face consultation on problems and issues students may have in using English. Workshops and seminars are offered regularly to students on specific areas of language that may be of interest to students. The English Table is set up to provide opportunities for students to have care free conversations in English.
