Company Overview
The Director of Government Relations and Public Affairs supports the Chamber in advocacy, strategic planning, and execution to fulfill AmCham HK’s mission – to foster commerce among the United States of America, Hong Kong and Mainland China, and enhance Hong Kong’s stature as an international business center.
The Director works closely with AmCham HK leadership, including the Board, Strategic Groups, and Committees in monitoring government policy directions and in engaging relevant public, private, and other stakeholders to effect change.
The Director is the key liaison to governments in the United States, Hong Kong, and various Asia Pacific nations, and also interacts with the PRC Government in support of the China Affairs team.
The Director is the key liaison to international and local media and is responsible for maintaining appropriate databases on the Chamber’s past, current, and projected advocacy issues in direct support of the Chairman and President for use with media interviews and other public statements.
The Director acts as the Secretariat of the AmCham Charitable Foundation overseeing the annual program of fundraising and donations.
Key Responsibilities
- Advise the leadership on strategic planning and implementation of Chamber advocacy activities to fulfill the mission of AmCham HK.
- Work closely with the leadership in formulating and executing AmCham HK’s advocacy agenda.
- Supervise the Government Relations and Public Affairs Team.
- Coordinate with other office departments by providing support and visibility to government priorities.
- Coordinate with the Publications and China Affairs departments in identifying, maintaining, and monitoring key relationships with government officials on advocacy and related information issues.
- Coordinate with the President, and the departments of Communications and Publications to ensure high quality of all printed materials related to advocacy communications.
- Maintain an updated Advocacy Dashboard to monitor progress toward advocacy goals.
- Ensure all Leadership and AmCham HK staff are fully informed of advocacy objectives and related monitoring processes.
- Establish and manage Standard Operating Procedures for cooperation with external organizations on advocacy issues to build capacity and effectiveness while protecting the AmCham brand.
- Liaise with international and local media partners, and coordinate press conferences and Q&A sessions as required.
- Oversee the donations and fundraising activities of AmCham Charitable Foundation.
Key skills: Self-motivated and intensely curious; first-rate writing skills; strong interest in understanding government policies; high EQ and a team player; a passion to serve AmCham leadership and membership needs; knowledge of HK, PRC, and US government structures. Experience with American Chambers in Asia preferred.
Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Law, Public Administration, Political Science or relevant disciplines (advanced degree preferred); 5+ years of experience in relevant position; fluency in English and Mandarin; Cantonese and other languages a plus.
